NMA State Alert for California: Quicker Booting of Cars Proposed to Raise Money
California, like many states, is strapped for cash. We get that. But state politicians are proposing to place extraordinary financial burdens on drivers as a means to ease the money crunch. Earlier this month, we sent out a statewide email alert about Gov. Schwarzenegger's new budget proposal to add over $338 million in annual state revenue by adding speed sensors to 500 existing red light cameras. The governor's office is not even trying to rationalize the move for public safety reasons; it is all about collecting more fines from motorists to help the state.
The City Council of Los Angeles recently submitted a proposal to Sacramento legislators that would generate even more revenue from the driving public. The requested change in state law would permit the California DOT to "boot" vehicles with three outstanding tickets, rather than the five tickets that are currently required. Los Angeles alone could receive an additional $61 million of revenue in fines per year from such action.
Here is a recent story about this proposal from NBC Los Angeles: http://www.nbclosangeles.com/around-town/cars/If-the-Boot-Fits-82967642.html
