NMA State Alert for Pennsylvania--Bill Would Allow Use of Radar by Municipal Police

A bill sponsored by Senate Transportation Committee Chairman John Rafferty, R-Berks County, is the latest attempt to authorize radar for municipal police in Pennsylvania, according to an August 20th pennlive.com report.

The state police have used radar to enforce speed limits on Pennsylvania highways since 1962, but municipal and regional police forces have never been granted access to the technology. Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation that does not permit local police officers to use radar.

Rafferty's panel held a hearing on the bill this week, but he said he will likely have to reintroduce his proposal next year because time is running out to pass it in this legislative session.

Radar units can generate erroneous readings for several reasons, and in practice, few of them are checked for accuracy as often as they should be. The National Motorists Association encourages concerned citizens to contact their State Senator listed here, or Transportation Committee Members listed here, to voice their opposition to this reversal of long-standing policy.

NMA State Alert for Virginia: Effort to Repeal Radar Detector Ban Fails

On January 22nd, we sent you this e-mail alert about VA House Bill 674 to repeal the statewide ban on radar detectors.  There was guarded optimism as HB674 moved out of the House Transportation Committee and on to the floor of the entire House for a vote.  Earlier this week, the House voted 61 to 38 to defeat the bill, which was originally proposed by Transportation Committee Chairman Joe May.

Here is a tally of the voting.  We suggest that you convey your appreciation or disgust with their respective votes accordingly.  E-mail addresses for each of the delegates is provided here.  From the same link, under Membership/Contact Information, you can also find individual telephone numbers if you prefer.

Joe May has been a steadfast proponent of repealing the radar detector ban in Virginia.  You might want to send him a sincere thank you for his continuing efforts.

NMA State Alert for Virginia: House Bill Introduced to Repeal Radar Detector Ban

Joe T. May, delegate in the Virginia General Assembly, and Chair of the House Transportation Committee, has introduced a bill to repeal the ban on radar detectors in the state.  May's HB674 was submitted last week, and it will be taken up by his committee.

This is not the first time that Mr. May has drafted language to eliminate the radar detector ban; he did something similar at the beginning of the 2006 legislative session.  It will take an active effort by Virginia residents such as youself to convince the Transportation Committee members to recommend HB674 for passage.  Here are the details of the bill:  http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?101+ful+HB674

For more information about the movement to repeal the Virginia ban on radar detectors, go to www.stoptheban.com.

Below is phone contact information for the members of the Virginia House Transportation Committee.  Please consider contacting each one to let them know of your support for HB674.  Their Capitol phone is listed first, followed by their District phone.  Here is the full list of delegates, where you can click on a name find mail and email address information:  http://dela.state.va.us/dela/MemBios.nsf/MWebsiteTL?OpenView
