NMA New York Alert: Sign Online Petition Against NYC Speed Cameras

Earlier this month we alerted you to legislation that would install 40 speed cameras throughout New York City.

In response to that, a group opposed to the proposal has started an online petition to stop the cameras. We encourage all New York members to sign the petition. Also pass this on to friends and family so they can sign as well.

Remember, speed cameras have nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with generating revenue on the backs of motorists. Properly established and posted speed limits coupled with fair enforcement promote compliance, not cameras. (Learn more about the NMA’s objections to speed cameras.)

NMA New York Alert: Put a Stop to Speed Cameras in NYC

It seems that 150 red-light cameras aren’t enough for New York City. So officials are pushing a bill to allow speed cameras into the city. Sponsored by Assembly member Deborah Glick, Assembly Bill 7737, is pitched as a “demonstration program” and would authorize the installation of 40 speed cameras throughout the five boroughs.

The bill has been referred to the Assembly Transportation Committee, chaired by Assemblyman David F. Gantt.

The NMA opposes photo traffic enforcement of any kind. Speed cameras have proven to be an unreliable and ineffective way to enforce speed limits. They put revenue generation ahead of public safety, to the detriment of motorists. Properly established and posted speed limits coupled with fair enforcement promote compliance, not cameras. (Learn more about the NMA’s objections to speed cameras.)

We urge you to contact the committee members as well as your local Assembly member to let them know you oppose this bill. Traffic enforcement in New York City is already oppressive without the addition of speed cameras, which will have no positive impact on safety.

NMA New York Alert: Anti-Red-Light Camera Group to Meet

New York was a "pioneer" in the use of red-light cameras, and as you are probably well aware, the cameras are prevalent in the state.

Not prevalent enough for some, though. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said he'd have the devices on every street corner if possible. (See the Autoblog article.) Also count New York City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown among the ardent camera lovers. (See our prior Alerts.)

The good news is that some New Yorkers have organized a citizen's group to fight the cameras. "New Yorkers Against Red Light Cameras" will be meeting this evening, to work on getting rid of RLC's in Nassau County.

Here is the notice of their meeting (from this Facebook page):

Learn how to help us get rid of the Red Light Cameras in Nassau County! If you don't want these unconstitutional revenue raising monstrosities on your street corners, come to the meeting and do something about it! It's a great group of friendly people-Tues. 7:30, Eleanor Rigby's (back room) 133 Mineola Blvd (off Old Country Rd), Mineola

We encourage local residents to attend. Or if you live elsewhere, show up anyway and get them to expand their scope! Or maybe you can get some ideas about setting up a group in your particular area! If you can't make tonight's meeting, maybe you can contact them and see what's coming next.

Every time the people get a chance to decide the fate of traffic cameras in their area, they get rid of them. Los Angeles and Houston just scrapped their programs. Maybe, just maybe, New York will be next.
