NMA New Mexico Alert: Vote "No" on ABQ Red-Light Cameras October 4th

We sent you a couple of Alerts back in May on the effort to rid Albuquerque of red-light cameras. (Cameras are stationed at 14 intersections throughout the city.) Well, the struggle continues.

Now Albuquerque has planned an advisory (non-binding) referendum on the cameras for October 4th. (See the ABQJournal story.)

Be advised: a committee called Safe Roads Albuquerque is sending out mailers in support of the cameras, but the committee is almost entirely funded by the company that operates the camera program, Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., which donated $45,000 to the effort, according to city campaign records.

The truth is that red-light cameras are not effective safety devices, and camera tickets trample on the due process guarantees that defendants are supposedly afforded by the Constitution. (See all the arguments against RLC's.)

Also, there is a lot of talk about the camera contracts being "revenue-neutral." That is nonsense, of course; why would the for-profit Redflex company bother with such contracts if it were not for the profit extracted from motorists...?

We urge all eligible Albuquerque residents to vote against the cameras on October 4th. Presumably the City Council will take the voters' will seriously -- otherwise, the voters can take their failure to do so seriously when they come up for re-election.

If you have family or friends in Albuquerque, forward this message to them so that they know what to do on the 4th.

NMA New Mexico Alert: Another Chance to Fight Red-Light Cameras in Albuquerque

We sent you an Alert recently about the renewal of the red-light camera contract in Albuquerque, a proposal to put cameras to a vote of the people, and the opportunity to speak out on both those issues at a City Council meeting. (See the prior Alert here.)

One diligent NMA member has informed us that the camera debate has been postponed until the next council meeting -- so you have another chance!

The next meeting is scheduled for June 6th. Once again, we urge you to attend if possible, and to forward this message to friends and family in Albuquerque. Just a few citizens' voices could make the difference in stopping a major, long-standing annoyance for the people of Albuquerque.

NMA New Mexico Alert: Help Decide the Future of Red-Light Cameras in Albuquerque

Do you think Albuquerque should get rid of its red-light cameras? Do you at least think they should be put to a vote of the people?

At an Albuquerque City Finance Meeting on Monday, May 16th, city councilors will vote on whether to extend the contract with Redflex, the Arizona-based company that runs the city's red-light camera program, and also, on a proposal by councilor Dan Lewis that would allow voters in October to decide whether to continue the program. (See the Kob.com story from May 9th.)

The National Motorists Association categorically opposes all red-light cameras and speed cameras. They do not improve safety, but rather are a cash grab by the government that tramples on motorists' legal rights. (See more arguments against the cameras here.)

We applaud Councilor Lewis for his efforts to rid Albuquerque of the cameras, or at least put them to a vote of the people. (In every case nationwide where they've been put to such a vote, they've been shot down.)

We urge Albuquerque citizens to contact Albuquerque City Councilors in advance of the Monday meeting, to let them know how you feel about the cameras and Lewis' proposals. If the meeting is public and you are able, show up and make your voice heard. Also, if you have friends or family in Albuquerque, share this message with them.
