NMA Louisiana Alert: Bill Would Put Red-Light Cameras to Vote of the People
Red-light cameras have been in the news in Louisiana lately, in part because of the police scandal involving double-dip payment for review of camera-ticket footage. (See the WWL story from April 28th.)
Quite apart from this unseemly story, though, we at the NMA strongly oppose red-light cameras in Louisiana and elsewhere; here are some reasons why.
Now Representative Jeff Arnold, (Algiers) has introduced legislation that would require red-light cameras to be approved by a vote of the people.
The bill (House Bill No. 347) is being lobbied against by the firm of Courson Nickel, among others. (See the "Dead Pelican" article from April 28th.) In the face of such moneyed interests, it is all the more important for citizens to make their voices heard in support of this bill.
Do you think the people should be able to decide for themselves on red-light cameras? If so, contact House Municipal Committee members and your representatives, to express your approval for House Bill No. 347, putting red-light cameras to a vote of the people.
