NMA Wisconsin Alert: Oppose Dane County Wheel Tax Proposal
As early as this week, the Dane County Board of Supervisors may vote on a wheel tax proposal that would require Dane County residents to pay an additional $15 to $25 per vehicle annually for the privilege of registering their vehicles in the county. This is on top of state registration fees already in place.According to news reports, the tax could raise up to $5 million, which would be used to close shortfalls in county-supported human service programs. A vocal minority of board members strongly opposes the measure. (Read more about their concerns and objections.) The National Motorists Association opposes the wheel tax as well. We believe that taxes related to driving or vehicle ownership should only be used for road construction and maintenance. Anyone who drives through Dane County would certainly agree that our roadways could stand improvement. History also shows that once a tax like this is in place (ostensibly to fill a one-time need), it never goes away and usually increases. We urge you to contact your local supervisor to state your opposition to this proposal. If you don't live in Dane County but have friends or relatives who do, let them know what’s going on and urge them to speak up.
